Kumbakonam- The Temple Town

 

Kumbakonam is one of the oldest towns at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu, also spelt as Coombaconum in the records of British India.

It is a town and a special grade municipality which is famous for its Mahamaham festival. In the 7th Century it was the Capital of Cholas king, Kumbakonam is the Famous temple town of South India, located amidst the two rivers Cauvery and Arasalar.

The city is famous for the Mahamaham festival that is celebrated once in 12 years in the Mahamaham Tank, Hindus consider taking a holy dip at the Mahamaham tank on the day of Mahamaham as sacred.

The last Mahamaham was celebrated on February 22, 2016 with more than 10 lakh people from various places taking the Holy dip in the Mahamaham tank. This located in the heart of the Kumbakonam town.

The Kumbakonam town, it is also famous for brass vessels. Betel leaves are cultivated more in Kumbakonam since it is known as Kumbakonam Vettrilai.

Kasi Viswanathar Temple:

It is located close to Mahamaham Tank and one more temple located in Solaiyappan Street, The main God is kasi viswanathar & Visalakshi .The peculiar about this temple is the Navakanniyar,Which are th1e 9 holy river namely Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Saraswati, Kaveri, Godavari, Tungabhatra, Krishna and Sarayu.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Adi Kumbeswara Temple:

It is located in the centre of Kumbakonam at Big Bazaar Street. The temple complex is huge and has Beautiful Artwork. This temple comprises three Praharas and three Gopurams in the eastern, northern and western directions.

It is believed that Govinda Theeksithan, which is renovated as oldest as the temple during the 16th  century, Mangala Theertham, Marriage hall and small temples for Muruga, Ganapathi and Mangalambigai.

Nageswaran Temple:

It is located near the Kumbakonam old bus stand, Nageswaran Temple, is dedicated to Shiva. It is also known as Koothandavar Kovil,Aditya Chola   constructed this temple during the 12th century. It stands as a great marvel of Chola architecture and Astronomy.

The design and orientation are structured in such a way that it allows sunlight inside the temple only during the Tamil month of Chithirai (April/May); it is also called Surya Kottam or Keel Kottam. This Temple vast known is for its shrine to Rahu, one of the nine celestial bodies in the Navagraha.

Someswar Temple:

It is located in this temple complex which situated in the southern portion of Sri Sarangapani temple. This temple faces east with a 5-tier Gopuram from the entrance.4

 

 

 

 

 

It also has an entrance in the south. The Architecture and Element of this temple resembles the Dravidian of the 13th century of the Chola period. Small temples for Arumugam and Thenar Mozhi Ammal .

Kalahasteeswarar Temple:

It is a Shiva temple located at Kumbakonam. The temple was renovated during the period of Serfoji. It is also known as Kalahasteeswarar. This Temple is known as Gnanambikai.  It stands as a great Serfoji marvel of architecture, building technology.5

Banapuriswarar Temple:

It is located in the  Kumbakonam town  at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicat6ed to the Hindu Lord Shiva. This Temple is known as Banupuriswarar.

 

 

 

 

 

Abimukeswarar Temple:

It is located in the eastern bank of the Mahamaham tank, it is in the Kumbakonam town, and it is a Lord Shiva temple. This is temple is for linga, It is also known as Amirthavalli.

Kambatta Viswanathar Temple:

It is located in the Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located at the south west of Kumbeswarar Temple. It is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. This Temple is also known as Kambatta Viswanathar.

Ekambeswarar Temple:

It is located in the Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. This Temple is also known as Ekambeswarar Temple.

Sarangapani Temple:

It is located is in the midst of the busy market place. Before the Sri Rangam Temple in the Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to the Lord Sarangapani,.This Temple is famous for pancharanga kshetram ,The Temple’s tower(gopuram ) It was built by the  Nayak Kings during the 15th century, this temple hold the place for the tallest Temple Tower in South Asia. This twelve storied 147 feet height.

12 Ramaswamy Temple:

It is located at the North side of Ramaswamy Temple. This is temple is for Chakraraja. The Sudharshana Chakra is also here. The temple is very early temple architecture. The peculiar point about this temple is that Vilva ,archana which is normally performed in Lord Shiva Temples is also performed here for the Lord Perumal (Lord Vishnu).

It is theTemple which is the peculiar paintings of Ramayana and it is very important Vaishanavite temple in Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The greatness of Ramaswamy Temple is said to be the only temple where The Lord Rama, the Goddess Sita are in the same platform and The Lord Hanuman is playing the veena instead of reading the Ramayana. The entire Temple is said to be made from Saligrama monolith. The Temple is filled with intricate Art carvings in all its pillars and also, it stands as a great architecture and Astronomy of Ramaswamy Temple

Rajagopalaswamy Temple:

It is situated at Big Street in Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This Temple is also known as Rajagopalaswamy. This temple is otherwise known as Sengamalavalli.

Varahaperumal Temple:

It is situated at Big Street in Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This Temple is also known as Varahaperumal. This temple is otherwise known as Boomidevi.

Pateeswaram temple:

Sri Thenupureeswarar temple at Pateeswaram village, 5 km south-east of Kumbakonam town at Thanjavur district in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu,It was constructed during the 16th  century by Govinda Dikshithar,It is a Minister of Nayak King Acchathappa.
